University Model School

Family Involvement

Pagosa Valor Academy’s university model structures a school week to blend a student’s learning between classroom days with a qualified teacher and satellite days at home with highly-involved parents.  The level of parent and teacher involvement adjusts as a student moves up in academic level to best prepare them for the time management and academic rigors of university upon completion of their High School courses.

Parent Roles in a University Model School

Parents play an integral part in the learning process of their student while teaming with PVA teachers.  Parents must be committed to their legal responsibility to provide a quality education for their children.  Parents also need to understand our philosophy of educating with a Biblical worldview.  Within the university model structure, parents will assume roles depending on the academic level of their child.

Co-Teacher

In Kindergarten through 4th grade, your role will be to receive instructions from the
classroom teacher on a regular basis outlining homework assignments, follow-up study over covered material, and preparation or review needed for the next class. This may require direct instruction at home and monitoring your child’s academic progress; including the timely submission of all assignments

Guide for Dependent Study

As student moves from 5th through 8th grade, you will help develop disciplined study habits through positive encouragement and through your students’ growing awareness of personal consequences. In order for these classes to be successful, the teacher is dependent upon
you to make certain that your son or daughter keeps up with the course material assigned and to communicate with the teacher if difficulties should arise.

Guide for Independent Study

In the high school years, you will have the opportunity to monitor the independent school work performed by your child by providing additional guidance as needed. Courses offered will mimic that of a Jr. College program where independent study skills and disciplined planning for completing homework assignments are necessary. This is the time when your children should hold primary responsibility for their schoolwork to facilitate ease of transition into college. Parents may also serve as course monitors or project assistants at times in their child’s education.
